Whether you are planning a trip, buying from an overseas store, paying an invoice or just curious, this converter shows how much one currency is worth in another. Rates are fetched from a public exchange-rate service and refreshed regularly, so you do not need to look them up yourself.

How to use it

How the conversion works

Rates are quoted against a base currency. To convert between two other currencies, the tool divides the amount by the rate of the source currency and multiplies by the rate of the target: result = amount ÷ rate(from) × rate(to). For example, if 1 USD equals 1.37 CAD, then 100 USD is 137 CAD.

Why the rate you get at a bank is different

What you see here is a mid-market rate: a reference figure between what buyers and sellers pay. Banks, card networks, airport kiosks and money-transfer services usually add a margin or fee on top. When you compare options, look at the total amount that will arrive, not only the advertised fee.

• Card payments abroad: ask for the charge to be made in the local currency. Choosing to be billed in your home currency at the till often carries a poor rate.
• Cash exchange: airport and hotel counters tend to be the most expensive. ATMs and local banks are often better.
• Transfers: compare a few providers, because fees and margins differ widely.
