How each number is measured
- Words are groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks.
- Characters include letters, digits, punctuation and spaces. The no-spaces figure leaves out spaces and line breaks.
- Sentences are counted by ending punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks.
- Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by blank lines.
- Reading time assumes an average adult silently reads about 200 to 250 words per minute. Speaking time assumes about 130 to 150 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations.

Is my text saved?
No. The counting happens in your browser, and the text is not uploaded or stored.
Why does my word count differ from Word or Google Docs?
Programs treat hyphenated words, numbers and symbols differently, so small differences are normal. Use the counter your school or publisher specifies when the number is critical.
Does it work in other languages?
It counts spaces and characters in any language, but word counts for languages that do not separate words with spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, are not meaningful.
